Sawdust Pie

All you need to prepare this easy pie recipe is a bowl and a spoon! If you've never tried Sawdust Pie, it could just become a quick family favorite. It's an Amish recipe that's made with a prepared pie crust, so it couldn't be easier. The taste is rich and buttery, and requires just a few simple ingredients. Pecans, graham cracker crumbs, egg whites, and sugar make the filling, so chances are you have all the ingredients!

Ingredients

  • 1 (9-inch) prepared pie shell
  • 1 1/2 cup flaked coconut
  • 1 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup egg whites; (6 to 7)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
  2. Line a pastry-lined, 9-inch pie plate with a double thickness of foil.
  3. Bake for 8 minutes. Remove foil. Bake for 4 to 5 more minutes or until golden. Cool on a wire rack.
  4. Turn oven down to 350 degrees F.
  5. Combine coconut, graham cracker crumbs, pecans and sugar in a large bowl. In another bowl, beat egg whites just until foamy; add to the coconut mixture. Mix well. Pour into the prepared pie shell.
  6. Bake, uncovered, in a 350 degree oven for 35 minutes or until set.

Is the pie crust prebaked or still raw when pouring the filling in to bake?

I will never make a snarky comment or throw someone's recipe under the bus, with that said....I tried this and I have to be sincerely honest. Either I messed up something along the way or this recipe is a fail. Sorry.

I truly doubt that the taste is buttery!
