Amish Apple Dumplings

We're fans of pretty much any Amish recipes, especially their dessert and pastry recipes. This recipe for Amish Apple Dumplings is an easy recipe for warm dumplings filled with apples and spiced with cinnamon, sugar, nutmeg and more. Once baked, the apples are tender and the pastries are perfectly golden brown on the outside. This is an age-old favorite recipe for apple dumplings you're sure to love. Serve with vanilla ice cream if you wish.

Serves: 6

Cooking Time: 45 min

  • 1 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 2 1/4 cups all-pupose flour
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 6 small apples
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. For syrup, mix 1 cup of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg and 1 3/4 cups water. Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in butter.
  3. For pastry, mix flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cut in shortening until coarse crumbs form.
  4. Add 6 to 8 tablespoons water, a little at a time, mixing until moistened. Form into a ball.
  5. Roll into an 18x12 inch rectangle; cut into six 6-inch squares.
  6. Peel and core apples. Place one fruit on each pastry square.
  7. Combine remaining sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Sprinkle over fruit.
  8. Moisten edges of pastry; fold corners to center atop fruit. Pinch to seal.
  9. Place in an 11x7x1 1/2 inch baking pan. Pour syrup over.
  10. Bake for about 45 minutes or until fruit is tender and pastry is brown. Serve with ice cream if desired.
