American Macaroni and Cheese

There is nothing more comforting than a nice plate of homemade macaroni and cheese. American Macaroni and cheese is only made with American cheese. No other cheeses. This baked macaroni and cheese recipe bodes well for picky cheese eaters.

Cooking Time: 30 min

Ingredients
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups elbow macaroni, dry macaroni
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 3/4 cups milk
  • 8 ounces American cheese
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
     
  2. Prepare macaroni according to package directions.
     
  3. Melt butter; add chopped onion and saute for a few minutes. Add salt, pepper, and flour. Stir and combine, then remove from heat.
     
  4. Add milk and stir. Bring to a boil slowly. Let boil for one minute, then remove from heat.
     
  5. Add cheese, stirring until all cheese is melted. Combine cheese mixture with macaroni in a 2-quart casserole dish.
     
  6. Bake at 375 degrees F for 30 minutes. If desired, garnish with slices of cheese or paprika before baking.
