Appelbeignets (Apple Fritters)

What could be better than fried apples? Try this delicious take on beignets as a decadent breakfast or brunch item, or serve them as a dessert with some fresh whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 4 cooking apples (peeled, cored and sliced thickly)
  • 30 grammes sugar (1 oz)
  • 100 grammes self-raising flour (about 3.25 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 decilitres milk (3.38 fluid ounces)
  • oil for frying
  • icing sugar

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle the apples with the sugar and cinnamon and set aside for 10 minutes.
     
  2. Mix the flour and salt together and add some of the milk, stirring until the batter is smooth. Stir in the rest of the milk. Heat the oil until it is very hot.
     
  3. Dip the slices of apple into the batter and fry them in the hot oil until they are brown. Drain and arrange the fritters on a warm dish.
     
  4. Dredge with icing sugar before serving.
