Aunt Betty's Buttermilk Pound Cake

Always a classic, Aunt Betty's Buttermilk Pound Cake receives rave reviews every time it's served. A traditional pound cake recipe that has stood the test of time, this is one of those simple Amish recipes that's impossible to resist. Once you taste this delicious homemade pound cake, you won't be able to resist taking a second slice. Top this fluffy buttermilk-based cake with fresh fruit for an even tastier treat!

Cooking Time: 1 hr

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons lemon extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
     
  2. Cream butter and shortening; gradually add sugar, beating well.
     
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition.
     
  4. Dissolve soda in buttermilk.
     
  5. Combine flour and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix just until blended after each addition.
     
  6. Stir in flavorings. Pour batter into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan.
     
  7. Bake for 1 hour or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
     
  8. Cool in pan 10 to 15 minutes; remove from pan, and let cool completely on a wire rack.
