A Brief History of Miracle Whip
Manufactured by Kraft Foods, Miracle Whip is a salad dressing and sandwich spread that is often used as a substitute for mayonnaise. Miracle Whip is a similar base as mayonnaise but becomes a reduced-fat product with the addition of sugar and spices. Miracle Whip began as Max Crosset's X-tra Fine Salad Dressing that he sold at his cafe in Salem, Illinois in the early 20th Century. Crosset sold the recipe to Kraft Foods in 1931 for $300. Up to that point, Kraft had been a popular manufacturer of mayonnaise, but sales were dropping due to The Great Depression. To boost sales, the company created Miracle Whip, a product with a similar taste and texture that would sell at a lower price. After its premiere at the Chicago World's Fair in 1933, Miracle Whip became a popular condiment for use on vegetables, fruits and salads.
