There's something comforting about old fashioned country biscuits and gravy. It may be the simplicity of the dish, or the childhood memories of the family sitting around the breakfast table. This homemade breakfast recipe will remind you why it is a classic.

Ingredients
  • For the Biscuits:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen butter, grated on large grater
  • 1/4 cup extra sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • For the Sausage Gravy:
  • 3 Italian mild sausages, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 low sodium bouillon cube
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 teaspoon rosemary, chopped
  • salt and pepper to taste
Instructions

For the Biscuits:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl mix flour, baking powder, salt and garlic powder.
  3. Add grated butter and cheese and mix it in well.
  4. Add the milk bit by bit until dough ball forms. Knead it just until the dough becomes ball without crumbles. Let it stand for couple of minutes.
  5. Roll the dough on floured surface to 1 inch thickness. With cookie cutter cut circles and place them on covered tray with parchment paper. Pop to oven for 12-15 minutes or until biscuits are puffed.

For the Gravy:

  1. Preheat oil in a skillet to medium high heat, add sausage and let caramelize for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add onion, garlic, rosemary, thyme and cook for 5 minutes or until starts to caramelize.
  3. Then season with cayenne pepper, salt and pepper. Mix in flour until well incorporated in oil. Then add milk, crumble bouillon cube and mix well, let it thicken for minute or so.

Assembly:

  1. Cut biscuit to half, cover the halves with gravy. Sprinkle chopped dill on top for garnish and enjoy!
