Spiced hamburgers are not your run-of-the mill homemade hamburger recipe, but they are definitely among the best. Don't settle for a plain old boring burger - make these spiced hamburgers and spice up your life!

Cooking Time10 min

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon finely minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 4 toasted hamburger buns
  • 4 slices red onion (thin slices)
  • 4 slices tomato
  • ketchup, for garnish
  • mustard, for garnish
  • mayonnaise, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Combine oil and onion in a small skillet over medium heat and cook, stirring, about 4 minutes, or until onions soften.

  2. Add garlic, pepper, nutmeg and coriander and continue to cook another minute.

  3. Scrape the onion mixture into a mixing bowl, add the beef and mix well.

  4. Form 4 patties, place on a plate, cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes.

  5. Place a large, heavy skillet on the stove over high heat. When it is nearly smoking, add the hamburger patties. Cook 2 minutes.

  6. Turn the patties and cook on the other side until desired doneness, about 1 minute for very rare, 4 minutes for medium-well.

  7. Arrange burgers on hamburger buns and garnish each with a slice of onion and tomato. Offer ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise.

Nutmeg in hamburger? Really? I like that these spices are different than what you normally see for a burger. I would think garlic and onion, but not the coriander and the nutmeg. That one really took me by surprise, but it's a good surprise. The red onion is my favorite. I love red onions on a burger.

If you like hamburgers, and like added zesty flavor, this recipe is for you. The onions, garlic, black pepper, nutmeg, and coriander cooked in olive oil, provide the spice in the ground beef. When making this, I would use lean ground beef, and serve the hamburgers with lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and mustard. A good side dish would be potato salad.
